SCT LOGISTICS PARKES OPEN TOURNAMENT

Sunday 18 September 2016

HISTORY OF THE PARKES OPEN TOURNAMENT

The annual Parkes Open Golf Tournament is renowned for the quality of its field as well as the friendships many have made at this iconic country tournament.

Since its inception in 1981 to its current format of 27 holes the tournament has grown into one of the States premier country tournaments. A tournament that continues to attract full fields of 160 players from all across NSW as well as some players from interstate and with a small band of organisers the event continues to thrive.

Over the years the tournament has been extremely grateful to its small band of sponsors and current naming rights sponsor SCT Logistics has now been involved for the past 8 years and according to its State Manager Jason Bovis it’s an event that gains tremendous exposure as well as being efficiently run and the friendships made are ever-lasting as the comradeship is second to none.

Country players have dominated at the event with former NSW State player Robert Payne dominating the event with twelve titles while his fellow Orange golfers have won the major event on another four occasions. Sydney based players have taken the spoils four times while Dubbo’s David and Matthew Gleeson are the only father and son to take the title and since its inception only two locals have taken the title with Denis McPherson in 1992 and Matthew Egan in 2015.

During its 35 years the event has been shared on two occasions the first being in 1990 when former Australian amateur champion Steve Conran of Orange and Gavin Coles from Bathurst couldn’t be separated and again in 2012 when Robert Payne and Matthew Gleeson had the same fate despite playing extra holes.

This year’s SCT Logistics Parkes Open Golf Tournament and it's prelude event the Atlas Copco Australia 4Ball Best Ball Stableford event will be held on the weekend 17th and 18th September, 2016 and if you require further information contact the tournament director Paul Thomas on 0427624683 or the club on 0268622044 for more details.
